If Your Dog Could Talk…
If your dog could talk, he might tell you that he knows his life span will be much shorter than yours, that for every year you live, it is like seven years for him. He knows he is no longer the cute little baby that you first brought home. He is all grown up now and gets aches and pains, has good days and bad, just like you.
He would probably tell you how much he loves you and how he cherishes the time you spend with him. He knows that you have your friends and your work, but all he has is you. He might tell you how depressing it is to be left alone all day, every day. When you leave the house, everything gets turned off, making it so quiet that the ticking of the clocks is the only sound he hears. He can’t even look out the window to watch the occasional car drive down the road because when you leave, you close the blinds and the curtains.
He might tell you how his heart begins to pound with excitement when he hears your vehicle in the drive or
your key turn the lock in the door that has been a barrier between him and the world for what seemed like an eternity. And when you walk through the door, he is sitting there patiently and you walk past him without even acknowledging his presence, he might tell you that it’s OK, he is still glad to see you.
When you sit down to relax for the evening, either in front of the TV or the computer, and your dog brings you his favorite squeaky toy or his ball, he is asking for your attention, begging you to play with him for a little while. Why do you buy him toys if you aren’t willing to share a few minutes of your time?
He may not understand every word you say, but he knows your tone of voice. He senses your feelings when you are sad, happy, or depressed. And even if you neglect him once in awhile, he will remain loyal to you.
If your dog could talk, would you listen?

It might be disappointing to hear my dog talk. I fill it all in for her, attributing human characteristics to her. She loves me, don’t tell me different! She wants me to pet her. Don’t let her tell me she has a headache. You get the idea.

Ah, that made me feel sad. The picture says it all. Luckily for the dogs I had there was always someone around. I worked at home a lot of years and then I no longer worked. My old Patches didn’t even seem interested in attention the last few years. He was just happy being there I guess.

Anita, I didn’t mean to make you sad. There are so many people that don’t appreciate their pets like you and I do. I just want them to realize that their pets are a part of the family and have feelings too. Oscar is my baby and I talk to him like a baby. I love my little guy!

Carol, I hope that anyone who reads this blog feels like we do about their pets. And if that pet does have a headache, love him (or her), pet him, cuddle him, whatever it takes to make him feel better.

I have a 13 year Golden Retriever that is totally besotted with me. He follows me everywhere and will not leave me to see someone else unless I tell him to with a stern voice. He is a total and complete mama’s boy. He was too old and too attached to be my service dog so he had a hard time when a new dog got to go everywhere with me. He has figured out, if Ebony has her vest on, he has to stay home. My housemate says he goes to the door when I leave and stays there until I return. It breaks my heart but there is no way he can go to the grocery store or doctor’s office though! People make fun of me that there is a big fuzzy dog bed in almost every room of the house but if they are going to follow me around, they should be comfy!

Bean, I have a huge red leather bean bag chair that belonged to my husband. I couldn’t bear to part with it when he died. The first day that I brought Oscar home he adopted that bean bag and accidentally tinkled all over it. Now I can’t part with it because Oscar has claimed it as his and it sits next to my recliner in the living room. As long as I have Oscar, I will have a huge red leather bean chair wherever Oscar wants it.

That made me cry. I was just googling to find out how to tell if your dog loves you. Now I can’t stop crying. I feel guilty enough just leaving him to go to work. But he knows when I come home, I’m all his for about an hour and if I come late, I always bring treats. I wonder what he would really say if he could talk…

I was reading your article about your loved pets. I have always treated my pets as one of the family. They go places with me…I talk to them as if they can understand my every word! They sleep with me and are my best buds. . .They follow me around the house from room to room and even when I did work, I would always spend time with them to let them know that even though I was away from them, I love them very much…Anyone who says that dogs don’t know, should think about getting one! They know when they are a part of the family or not. . they know if your heart is there for them or not…they KNOW! ! !
