Eco Friendly Shopping Bags – video update

These bags are the way of the future.

Since most cashiers are timed on the number of items they scan, some by the minute, some by the hour, it would be nice if grocery stores would make it more convenient for the cashier to use the bags. They really kill a good scan rate and slow down the whole check-out process.

Another Thought on Too Much Plastic

If you grocery shop at a store where the cashier is also the bagger and you want to cut down on the number of plastic bags you leave the store with,  maybe you should think about how you place your items on the belt.

An experienced cashier will bag “like” items together if they are within reach. If he/she can not reach items that should be bagged together, it will result in you having more bags than necessary.

An inexperienced cashier will bag your items exactly the way you put them on the belt. The bags will probably be full so you will have fewer bags, but do you really want a 5 lb bag of flour on top or your fresh tomatoes or the drain cleaner in the same bag with the bread?

You can reduce the number of plastic bags and have your groceries bagged properly if you pay attention to how you place your items on the belt.

Too Much Plastic?

It seems that the United States is finally becoming aware of the fact that there is too much plastic in the world and we are being encouraged to take our own reusable bags to the grocery store. Fantastic idea, Europeans have been doing this for years.

Grocery stores are promoting the reusable bags but where I live, the stores are not set up to make the use of these bags convenient. The quality and size of the bags vary, depending of where they were purchased. If reusable bags are the way of the future for grocery shopping, then there needs to be a lot of improvement made, either to the bags or the bagging area.

It seems rather ludicrous to walk out of the grocery store carrying a reusable bag filled with styrofoam plates, plastic cups, plastic flatware, plastic trashbags, disposable diapers, and hangers. And look at all of the food products that come in plastic containers – milk, margarine, yogurt, cottage cheese, juice, soda, condiments, and on and on and on. And don’t forget laundry detergent, bleach, fabric softener, shampoo, conditioner, mouth wash, and toothpaste. The list seems never ending.

Pumpkin Decorating Contest – Halloween 2007

My daughter is the Floral Design Manager at a local arts and crafts store. Last October, her supervisor instructed her to decorate a pumpkin to be entered into their district wide competition for Halloween.

She is a very creative and talented individual, somewhat extreme at times. Her idea for the contest involved decorating four pumpkins. If you were ever a “Kiss” fan, you should have no probem recognizing these members of the group.

Saving the Baby Hummingbird

A few weeks ago, my step-Mom (hereafter referred to as Mom) received a frantic phone call from a neighbor about a baby hummingbird in her yard. The baby couldn’t fly and since they live on the river, there was concern that the baby would be eaten by a snake.

Mom to the Rescue!

Being the pet lover that she is, my Mom went to the neighbor’s yard and scooped up the baby and took it home. Too bad for the local snake population. They would have to find something else to dine on.

My Mom filled an eye-dropper with nectar and the baby stuck her beak in the tiny opening to eat. She sat on my Mom’s shoulder while my Mom moved around the house.

The image above shows how small the baby is in my Mom’s hand. In the image on the left, she is sitting on a toothpick.

After several days of playing “Mom” to the baby, the baby was strong enough to fly and away she flew. Hopefully, the baby found her “relatives” and is back where she belongs.

Attempting to use the VodPod Widget on a WordPress Hosted Blog

The VodPod widget has given me a very big headache over the last few days!

There are several videos in my pod on vodpod.com. I have the widget set to display 4 videos in the sidebar on my blog. If you click on one of the videos, it will play. No problem there.

There are 2 arrows located near the bottom of the video box. I assumed these arrows were suppose to let you browse through the videos that aren’t displayed, but evidentally it doesn’t always work. Sometimes if you click on the arrow pointing right, the video box shrinks, no videos are present, and the arrows remain where the bottom of the video box used to be. Yuk! What is wrong here? Sometimes it does work for about 5 clicks, then you guessed it. The video box shrinks again and no videos!

I tried moving the widget to the bottom of the sidebar and I still have the same problem but at least the arrows are not on top of anything.

I visited numerous blogs through links on vodpod.com. It seems that the widget works differently, depending on the blog host.

Could this be a theme problem? My theme supports widgets so I am not sure.

But my efforts to use this widget were not in vain. VopPod is another great site to follow and communicate with other bloggers.

I have come to the conclusion that this widget it much like a child. You never know if it will embarrass you in public.

Stop! If your blog is for personal use, to be shared with family and friends only, then don’t join any of the blog directories.

Caution! A lot of eyes will be watching that grocery store bulletin board. Use common sense about how much personal information you make public.

But face it, if you post anything on the web, you are setting yourself up for criticism, bashing, or praise. Several teenagers have committed suicide because of bullying on MySpace. You can be ridiculed by your neighbors on rottenNeighbor. Women can trash a bad date on Don’t Date Him Girl.

Go!  Publicize your blog as much as possible to increase traffic. Whether you are blogging for fun, fame, or fortune, PUBLICIZE!

Can You Digg It?

Hello! Posting from within the Digg website.

This is crazy and I don’t think I will ever use this option, but it is nice to know that I can use it if I need to.

If you click on the “read more” link, it will take you to Sliloh’s Rambles and her post about the Pineal Gland Tumor.

If you click on the “digg story” link, it will take you to her post on the tumor on Digg.com.

Oh well, I am experimenting and trying something new. I have already found out through trial and error that I will have to go into my WordPress account and put this into a category and give it some tags.

Bird Poop Facial

NOT on my wrinkles and freckles! I like to try new things but this is just not on my list of things to try.

A bird poop facial is the latest trend coming from Japan, called the Geisha Facial. Geisha are known for their unblemished, extremely white complexions.

This newest trend in facials is offered at the Shizuka New York Spa.

The bird poop is sanitized using ultraviolet light to kill the bacteria but can bird poop really be sanitary? Just the thought of bird poop on my face makes my stomach churn.

American women spend millions of dollars a year on beauty products. Everyone is looking for that quick fix to rid their bodies of everything from cellulite to unwanted hair. I wonder how many will be willing to spend $180 and up for bird poop.

Can you imagine the beautiful tanned bodies in their string bikinis on the beach all having a white face? It would look like a freak show.

Personally, I prefer a little color on my face so I won’t be getting rid of my tinted moisturizer.

There is a lot more to this blogging business than I ever dreamed. Now that I am actually giving it a try, do I really want people to be able to find me?

I visited the BlogCatalog and was able to find Sliloh’s Rambles quite easily. I just typed in the name and hit the enter key. Voila! There it was. It sounds like Sliloh may think this is a little scary too.

Maybe the entire class should join BlogCatalog and we could start our own little group on Personal Blogs - BlogCatalog Blog Directory.
